What to Say in a 30-Second Networking Pitch – Examples for Small Businesses
30-Second Networking Pitch Examples That Help People Understand, Remember and Refer Your Business
You've got 30 seconds.
Everyone is looking at you.
And you've somehow got to explain:
Who you are.
What your business does.
Who you help.
Why somebody should use you.
And who you'd like to meet.
No pressure then.
If you attend business networking meetings, you've probably heard hundreds of 30-second introductions.
Some immediately make sense.
Others contain so much information that by the time the person sits down, you're thinking:
“What was it they actually did?”
A good 30-second networking pitch doesn't need to explain your entire business.
It needs to give the people listening enough information to:
Understand you.
Remember you.
And ideally:
Recognise somebody they could introduce to you.
Below you'll find a simple formula and practical 30-second networking pitch examples for small businesses that you can adapt to your own networking meetings.
What Should You Say in a 30-Second Networking Pitch?
A simple structure is:
1. Who are you?
2. Who do you help?
3. What problem do you solve?
4. What should people listen for?
5. What introduction do you want?
In other words:
NAME + CUSTOMER + PROBLEM + REFERRAL TRIGGER + ASK
For example:
“I'm Kim Wheatley, a business coach and mentor. I work with established SME owners who are incredibly busy but frustrated that they aren't making enough profit for the amount of work they're doing. If you hear a business owner saying, ‘We're busier than ever but there's never enough money left,’ that's a good introduction for me. I'm Kim Wheatley.”
That's enough.
Your 30-Second Pitch Isn't Your Life Story
You've only got 30 seconds.
You don't need to explain:
- When the business started.
- Every qualification.
- Every service.
- Every type of customer.
- Every location you cover.
- Your entire career history.
Those things may be relevant later.
Your immediate objective is to answer:
“Who should I introduce to this person?”
If the listener can answer that, your networking pitch has done an important part of its job.
Don't Try to Sell to Everyone in the Room
This is one of the biggest shifts you can make.
Imagine 25 business owners are listening.
Perhaps none of them currently needs your service.
That doesn't mean there isn't an opportunity.
Each of those 25 people has:
- Customers.
- Suppliers.
- Friends.
- Business contacts.
- LinkedIn connections.
- Professional relationships.
Instead of only speaking to the 25 people in front of you, you're potentially speaking to the network behind them.
Your pitch should therefore make you easier to refer.
Give People Something to Listen For
Instead of:
“I help businesses improve profitability.”
try:
“If you hear a business owner saying, ‘We're incredibly busy but there never seems to be enough profit,’ that's a good introduction for me.”
That's a referral trigger.
It gives the listener a phrase or situation to recognise.
This can be much easier to remember than a service description.
30-Second Networking Pitch Template
Use this as your starting point:
“I'm [NAME] from [BUSINESS].
I help [TYPE OF CUSTOMER] who are struggling with [SPECIFIC PROBLEM].
We help them [OUTCOME].
So if you hear someone saying [REFERRAL TRIGGER], I'd really appreciate an introduction.
I'm [NAME] from [BUSINESS].”
You don't have to follow the wording exactly.
Make it sound natural.

“I'm Emma from ABC PA Services. I help busy executives and business owners manage their diaries, meetings, travel and administration. If you hear somebody saying, ‘My diary is running me instead of me running my diary,’ that's a great introduction.”
Industry-Based Networking Pitch
You don't always have to focus on a problem.
You can target a specific sector.
For example:
“I'm Kim Wheatley, business coach and mentor. This month I'm particularly looking to meet owners of established construction and trades businesses in Essex with teams of five or more. If you know an electrician, builder, heating engineer or roofing company that's growing and could use additional business support, I'd appreciate an introduction.”
This helps members search a particular part of their network.
Location-Based Networking Pitch
You can also focus on geography.
For example:
“I'm Kim Wheatley, business coach and mentor. This week I'd particularly like to meet established business owners in Chelmsford. If you know someone there who's built a good business but is struggling with profitability, staff or working too many hours, I'd appreciate an introduction.”
Named-Company Networking Pitch
Sometimes the strongest request is highly specific.
For example:
“I'm Kim Wheatley, business coach and mentor. This week, rather than asking for a type of business, I'm looking for an introduction to ABC Ltd in Brentwood. If anyone knows the owner or senior management team well enough to make an introduction, I'd really appreciate a conversation after the meeting.”
There's no ambiguity.
Question-Based 30-Second Pitch
Start with a question:
“Do you know a business owner who's the first person into work, the last person out and still answering emails at 10 o'clock at night? I'm Kim Wheatley, and I help established SME owners build businesses that are less dependent on them. If somebody immediately came to mind, I'd appreciate an introduction.”
Questions can help people mentally search their network.
Story-Based 30-Second Pitch
“A business owner recently said to me, ‘I've got 12 employees but somehow I still end up doing everything.’ That's a problem I regularly help SME owners work through. So if you know someone with a growing team who still can't get away from the day-to-day business, I'd appreciate an introduction. I'm Kim Wheatley, business coach and mentor.”
Stories can make the referral situation easier to visualise.
Problem-Based 30-Second Pitch
“Being busy and being profitable aren't the same thing. I'm Kim Wheatley, and I work with SME owners who are generating plenty of work but frustrated by how little profit is left at the end. If you hear somebody saying, ‘We're flat out but there's never enough money,’ that's a great introduction for me.”
Results-Based 30-Second Pitch
You can also start with the desired outcome.
For example:
“What would an extra 5% improvement in your margins mean to your business? I'm Kim Wheatley, and I work with SME owners who want to improve profitability rather than simply chase more turnover. If you know an owner with good sales but disappointing margins, I'd appreciate an introduction.”
Avoid promising specific results you can't substantiate.
Seasonal Networking Pitches
Seasonal themes can make regular introductions more interesting.
For example:
January
“New year, new targets — but a target without a plan is just a number…”
Then connect it to your ideal referral.
Summer
“If you know a business owner who can't take a week's holiday without constantly checking their phone…”
Perfect referral trigger for owner dependency.
Christmas
“If you know a business owner looking at next year's targets and wondering how they're going to achieve them…”
The theme should support the referral message rather than distract from it.
Humorous Networking Pitches
Humour can work well if it's natural to you.
For example:
“If you know a business owner with ten employees who still believes, ‘It's quicker if I just do it myself,’ please introduce us before they employ number eleven.”
Short.
Relatable.
And still commercially relevant.
What NOT to Say in Your Networking Pitch
“Anyone”
“I'm looking for anyone who needs an accountant.”
Too broad.
Every Service
“We do bookkeeping, payroll, accounts, tax, VAT, forecasting…”
Too much information.
Generic Claims
“We offer excellent customer service.”
Not a referral trigger.
Too Much Jargon
If the room doesn't understand your terminology, they can't refer it.
No Ask
You explain everything beautifully.
Then sit down.
Tell people what you're looking for.
Bad Networking Pitch Example
“Hi, I'm John from ABC Solutions. We've been trading for 17 years and pride ourselves on offering a professional, customer-focused, bespoke and comprehensive range of solutions tailored to each individual client's requirements. We provide A, B, C, D, E and F, so if you know anybody who needs any of those services, please let me know.”
What's the referral?
It's difficult to tell.
Better Version
“I'm John from ABC Solutions. We help commercial property managers who are frustrated by unreliable contractors. If you hear a property manager saying they're fed up chasing contractors who don't turn up when promised, I'd appreciate an introduction.”
Much clearer.
How to Create Your Own 30-Second Networking Pitch
Write down the answers to these five questions:
1. Who is your ideal customer?
Be specific.
2. What problem are they experiencing?
Choose one.
3. What outcome do you provide?
Keep it simple.
4. What might they actually say?
This becomes your referral trigger.
5. What introduction do you want?
Give the room a clear action.
Now turn the answers into approximately 60–80 spoken words.
Then practise it aloud.
Don't Write for the Page – Write for the Ear
This is important.
A networking pitch is spoken.
Something that looks great written down can sound unnatural when spoken.
Read it aloud.
Remove:
- Long sentences.
- Complicated words.
- Unnecessary details.
- Anything you stumble over.
Make it conversational.
Don't Memorise Every Word
You don't necessarily need to recite it like an actor learning a script.
Know:
The opening.
The problem.
The trigger.
The ask.
Then speak naturally.
You want confidence, not robotic perfection.
Time Yourself
Thirty seconds disappears quickly.
Use your phone timer.
If the pitch takes:
52 seconds
you haven't written a 30-second pitch.
Cut it.
Aim to finish comfortably within the group's limit rather than racing through the final sentence.
Slow Down
Business owners often speak much faster when they know they're being timed.
That makes the pitch harder to understand.
Fewer words delivered clearly can be much more effective than cramming in extra information.
Change One Thing Each Week
If you're in a weekly networking group, don't reinvent everything.
Keep:
Your identity
and:
Your core positioning
consistent.
Change:
The problem
or:
The referral trigger
or:
The target industry
or:
The specific ask.
This creates consistency without becoming repetitive.
10 Referral Triggers You Could Adapt
“We're really busy but not making enough money.”
“I need more customers.”
“We're getting enquiries but nobody buys.”
“My staff bring every problem to me.”
“I can't get away from the business.”
“We're struggling to recruit.”
“Our website doesn't generate anything.”
“I don't know where the money goes.”
“We're spending money on marketing but don't know what's working.”
“We've grown but everything feels chaotic.”
These phrases are more useful than:
“Anyone looking for business services.”
Use Your Networking Group to Test Your Marketing Message
There's another benefit.
If people consistently struggle to understand your 30-second pitch, potential customers may also struggle to understand your website or marketing.
Networking gives you immediate feedback.
Watch for:
- Confused expressions.
- Questions.
- People repeating your message incorrectly.
- Which pitches generate conversations afterwards.
Use that feedback to improve your wider marketing.
Ask Someone to Repeat What You Do
Try this after several meetings:
“If someone asked what I do, what would you tell them?”
Their answer tells you whether your message is landing.
If they can say:
“Kim helps SME owners who are busy but not making enough profit.”
Great.
If they say:
“Kim does… business… something…”
you need more clarity.
Keep a Networking Pitch Bank
Create 10–20 pitches in advance.
For example:
WeekTopicReferral Trigger1ProfitBusy but not making money2SalesEnquiries but no sales3StaffProblems always come to owner4TimeWorking too many hours5Cash flowProfit but no cash6PricingAfraid to increase prices7RecruitmentCan't find good people8SystemsEverything is in owner's head9ReferralsNeed more recommendations10GrowthBusiness becoming chaotic
Now you don't need to invent something five minutes before every meeting.
Measure Which Networking Pitches Work
Track:
Pitch topic
Conversations generated
Introductions
Qualified opportunities
Customers
You may discover that certain problems consistently resonate with your network.
Use that information.
A Simple 30-Second Networking Pitch Checklist
Before your next meeting ask:
Is it under 30 seconds?
Is the ideal customer clear?
Am I talking about one main problem?
Have I used everyday language?
Is there a clear referral trigger?
Have I made a specific ask?
Could another member repeat it?
If yes, you're ready.
Remember: Your Pitch Isn't Supposed to Close the Sale
You aren't trying to get somebody to make a £10,000 purchasing decision during your 30-second introduction.
The pitch needs to create:
Recognition
and ideally:
A conversation or introduction.
That's enough.
Make Your Business Easy to Refer
The best networking pitch isn't necessarily the funniest.
Or the cleverest.
Or the most polished.
It's the one that makes somebody think:
“I know exactly who you should speak to.”
So keep it simple.
One customer.
One problem.
One trigger.
One ask.
Then next week, teach them something else.
Over time, your networking contacts develop a much stronger understanding of your business.
And that makes you much easier to refer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I say in a 30-second networking pitch?
Introduce yourself, explain who you help, focus on one problem you solve, give the listener a recognisable referral trigger and finish with a clear request for an introduction.
How many words is a 30-second networking pitch?
Speaking speed varies, but roughly 60–80 words is a useful starting range for many people. Time yourself speaking naturally rather than relying solely on a word count.
What is an example of a 30-second business networking pitch?
For a business coach: “I'm Kim Wheatley. I work with established SME owners who are incredibly busy but aren't seeing enough profit. If you hear an owner saying, ‘We're busier than ever but never seem to have enough money left,’ that's a good introduction for me.”
How do I introduce myself at a networking meeting?
Give your name and business, then quickly move to who you help and the problem you solve. Avoid spending most of your available time on company history or a long list of services.
Should I use the same 30-second pitch every week?
Keep your core positioning consistent but vary the problem, story, referral trigger or target customer. Over time, this teaches regular networking contacts about the different situations in which they can refer you.
What makes a networking pitch memorable?
Specific problems, everyday customer language, short stories and clear referral triggers can make a pitch easier to remember. Clarity is generally more valuable than trying to sound clever.
What is a referral trigger?
A referral trigger is a phrase, situation or problem that indicates somebody may need your service. Teaching networking contacts these triggers helps them recognise potential introductions.
Should I mention prices in my networking pitch?
Usually not unless price is particularly relevant to your positioning or referral request. With only 30 seconds, explaining the customer, problem and referral opportunity is generally more useful.
Should a networking pitch be funny?
It can be, but humour should support rather than obscure the message. If people remember the joke but can't remember what you do or who to refer, the pitch hasn't achieved its main objective.
How do I finish a networking pitch?
Finish with a specific referral request. For example: “If you hear a business owner saying they're incredibly busy but not making enough profit, I'd appreciate an introduction.”
How do I get more referrals from networking?
Be clear about your ideal customer, teach members your referral triggers, build relationships through one-to-one meetings, make specific requests, give useful introductions yourself and follow up professionally.
Can a business coach help improve my networking pitch?
Business coaching can help clarify your ideal customer, message, referral triggers and networking strategy so the people in your network can more easily recognise and introduce suitable opportunities.
